Into The Wild
by Jon Krakauer

View in Library Catalog

"Into the Wild" recounts the real-life experiences and story of Chris McCandless. Prodigiously inspired by Henry David Thoreau, McCandless embarks on a calamitous and harrowing jaunt to the desolate Alaskan wilderness in order to procure a transcendentalist experience. The unique aspect of this book is that the author, Jon Krakauer, makes note the readers will have to decide whether the journey of McCandless makes him a valiant hero or an obdurate and narcissistic individual. The book discusses some of the reasons that he embarked on such an audacious journey and left his family with no word of warning. In its entity, I think this book is quite interesting and insightful. If you are fond of nonfiction stories, this book is for you!

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower
by Stephen Chbosky

View in Library Catalog

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a coming-of-age novel that follows Charlie, a freshman who must maneuver his way through his tumultuous life and high school. Indubitably, as per the title, he is a wallflower; he is reticent and introverted. To help him break away from his reserved shell, he befriends two people, Sam and Patrick. By joining their circle, Charlie procures a multitude of memories. By the end of the novel, Charlie unearths a grisly fact about his childhood. This novel deals with imperative themes pertaining to mental illness, trauma and abuse. I absolutely love this book; the writing style and charming characters make it the full package. This book, although beautifully crafted, is not for the faint of heart. However, if you are able to handle heavy themes, I unreservedly recommend this.

They have a very close friendship and out of nowhere, the biggest tragedy happens to this seemingly perfect family

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Slippery Slope
by Lemony Snicket

"The Slippery Slope" is the tenth installment in the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" series. In this novel, three orphans, the Baudelaire children, are still attempting to escape from the malevolent man who is after their fortune: Count Olaf. In this novel, the Baudelaire children end up in the mountains which definitely doesn't make their experiences any less distressing. This book is really amazing, I like how this book introduces novel characters. The plot is solid and enticing. I unreservedly recommend this novel.

It's your Ship
by Michael Abrashoff

View in Library Catalog

It’s Your Ship by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff is about how his ship USS Benfold became the best ship in the navy. He discussed the leadership tactics and lessons he taught his men and women on his ship and what he learned from others. Abrashoff touches upon a new way of leadership each chapter. First, he says how to take command without being too bossy and bring down your team rather than tell them what they did wrong and how they can fix it. Next, he explains how his sailors have now learned with his leadership how to take action on their own. To take responsibility for the ship like it’s their own and then you see how everything works better, especially when people then get confident enough to then share ideas to make everything better. Abrashoff talks about how he leads by example and why that's important. He explains how one no is going to want to work and do their best when their boss doesn't care or do any work. It's important to lead by example because others will then want to follow your footsteps to be successful too. Also he tells readers that it’s important to communicate with your team. Communication is the number one thing that runs a great business. When you address your team and talk to them and tell the truth, everyone can be on the same page and work as a team and get the job done. The Captain shares that most of his lessons he learned and that he shares are from Defense Secretary William Perry. How he was one of his biggest role models and whatnot. I would recommend this book because it teaches you good lessons about how to be a good leader and to be a part of a team and how to work towards one central goal. This book was interesting to read and it opened my eyes to new ideas of leadership.
