A History Of The World In 6 Glasses
by Tom Standage

View in Library Catalog

This history book is unreservedly remarkable. I do not read history books often, but I am unreservedly glad I read this one as it apprises readers about the history of the world in a pleasurable regard. The idea of manifesting the course of history through the delineation of six distinct beverages is astonishing and remarkable. Beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola are the beverages manifested throughout the book. Each of these drinks have shaped history and symbolized salient things. For instance, beer was scrutinized as a beverage that brought upon a fruitful life for Sumerians, and it was showcased in a myriad of literature. Wine was regarded as medicine and spirits played a prodigious role in the American Revolution. Coffee was an eminent drink during the Age of Reason when scientists and other intellectuals gathered together in coffeehouses . Coca-cola was initially inaugurated as a patent medicine, and it has now become a symbol of globalization. I prodigiously recommend this to anyone yearning to learn about world history!
