A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Wide Window
by Lemony Snicket

View in Library Catalog

"The Wide Window" is the third installment in the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" series. In this book, three orphans, the Baudelaire children, will now have to live with their aunt Josephine. Aunt Josephine seems to be scared of practically everything. Although it may seem like these children are safeguarded, the cunning and malevolent Count Olaf has concocted plans to ruin their comfort by stealing the Baudelaire fortunate. The Baudelaire fortune was money left behind by the Baudelaire's parents. This book, just like the other books in this series, is beautifully written. The characters are charming and it's fun to read about their harrowing adventure. Be prepared to witness an odious and despondent atmosphere. I unreservedly recommend this book!

"A Long walk to water" features two distinct stories that take place in Sudan. One story is about a girl named Nya who must endure the daily struggle of fetching water for her family. The second story is about Salva who unequivocally struggles from civil war as he becomes separated from his family and witnesses gruesome happenings. This book is extremely insightful and wonderfully told. I unreservedly recommend this book!

The Book Thief
by Markus Zusak

View in Library Catalog

This novel takes place during the harrowing time when Germany was utterly controlled by the Nazis. It follows a girl, Liesel, who resides with her foster family. Her family hides a Jewish man named Max in their basement. Promptly, Liesel and Max inaugurate a close bond. Furthermore, as an unreserved lover of books, Liesel is seen throughout this story stealing them. The writing of this book is remarkable; the detailed elucidations by the narrator, Death, add to the dismal and dejected mood. This book is indubitably grim and heart-wrenching. Additionally, there are a prodigious array of important themes and moral lessons manifested throughout this novel. It is a must read for teens and adults alike!

The Inheritance Games
by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This novel follows Avery Grambs, a girls who spontaneously inherits a prodigious sum of money. This entails her to go embark on a jaunt to unearth the reasoning behind her procuration of such an exorbitant amount of wealth. At first glance, I didn't think I would enjoy this book as it seemed to be the cliché "go-on-a-mission" story. However, I was pulled in by the charming characters, the Hawthorne brothers, who ultimately made the novel a pleasurable read. The romance aspect of this novel further made this novel enticing. I'm looking forward to the sequel, and I would recommend this to anyone who is fond of the mystery genre!
